Solihull Council is celebrating the 75th anniversary of National Tree Week (Saturday 25 November – Sunday 3 December) by planting over 400 trees across the borough.
The Council will also be marking National Tree Week with a wide variety of projects. These include planting a weeping willow tree at Nethercote Gardens for the winning resident of the ‘Win A Gift That Keeps On Growing’ competition, cherry trees with the Friends of Shirley Park at Shirley Park and celebration trees that residents have sponsored in Hope Coppice.
To celebrate the Tree Council’s ‘Grow a tree in 23’ campaign, Solihull Council is working with Lloyds Banking Group, who have provided trees to be planted at Dorridge Cricket Club and Robin Hood Cemetery. Their staff joined the Council’s Planting Our Future team and the Leader of Solihull Council, Councillor Ian Courts, to help create a small woodland at Dorridge Cricket Club this week.
Cllr Ian Courts, Leader of Solihull Council, said:
“This year, we are celebrating 75 years of National Tree Week with several super projects in Solihull. It’s great that we will be planting more trees than we ever have in one season.
“This is a fantastic step towards our ongoing commitment to plant 250,000 trees by 2030. Since the campaign started in 2020, we have planted an impressive 75,000 across the borough and we are on track to plant another 25,000 in 2023/24.
“Trees provide us with lots of benefits, including capturing and storing carbon as they grow, reducing flooding, and providing habitats for thousands of species. We are lucky to have such a dedicated community of tree planters and local volunteers who look after Solihull’s parks and green spaces.”
This planting season, the Planting Our Future team are also working with numerous schools in the borough to plant boundary hedgerows as well as partnering with private landowners to create small woodlands and hedgerows on their land.
The team needs new landowners to partner with to create areas for tree planting, hedgerow and green corridors.
