Carers Trust has received a donation of £1500 thanks to the Deputy Mayor of Solihull, Councillor Ken Meeson who chose them as one of his mayoral charities during his time as Mayor.
The charity works to encourage and support unpaid carers across the borough, providing advice and resources to help them live fulfilled lives.
Councillor Meeson visited Carers Trust last week to present a cheque to a group of young carers, some of whom volunteer as peer mentors. Peer mentors help other young carers by sharing their experiences with them and giving advice to help to learn, cope, manage and get through tough times. The funds will go towards creating more respite opportunities for young carers and building their support networks through the club and activity programme, and peer mentoring project.
Deputy Mayor, Councillor Ken Meeson, who held the position of Mayor from 2021 until 2023 has had a long-standing interest in children’s and young people services and has been instrumental in ensuring young carers are recognised and assisted.
Deputy Mayor, Councillor Ken Meeson said,
"Young carers are a group I feel very passionate about, having spent many years campaigning for better recognition of the challenges they face. They are now receiving much better support both locally and nationally and the work of Solihull Carers Centre is making a real difference to their lives. Providing some funding from my Mayoral Fund demonstrates my admiration of these dedicated young people who go above and beyond to provide support for parents and siblings who rely on them for daily care. They so often miss out on so many aspects of childhood activities and I hope this recognition will also raise greater awareness of their sacrifice and dedication.
It is an honour to meet with these young carers who are working with the Trust and to learn of the practical support that can make such a difference.”

This will go to supporting our young carers to take a break from caring at monthly club sessions and fun activities in the holidays where they can meet others in similar situations, making friends and benefiting from peer support.
