In commemoration of Holocaust Memorial Day, an event in Solihull will be held on Thursday 25 January 2024.
Holocaust Memorial Day takes place every year on 27 January, the day marks the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp. This day prompts us to think of those affected by the Holocaust, as well as more recent genocides such as those in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia, and Darfur. 2024 marks the 30th anniversary of the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda.
This year’s theme is “Fragility of Freedom”- signifying how fragile freedom really is and how freedoms of people during genocide are restricted. Restricting freedoms is a slow process which develops over time, and that liberties are often taken for granted. Holocaust Memorial Trust outlines 2024’s theme and provides more information on what “Fragility of Freedom” represents.
The council-led event will be attended by Holocaust survivor, Dr Martin Stern, Rabbi Yehuda Pink, and the Mayor of Solihull, among others. There will be musical performance and a poetry reading by school pupils from Solihull.

This event will provide a safe space for people to come and reflect on this day and what it means.”
