Improvements and benefits
Why the Council is delivering these improvements
- The junction experiences significant congestion during busy periods and JLR shift change times, affecting general traffic and bus journeys, with further demand expected
- The current pedestrian and cycle provision requires improvement, with an ageing footbridge and limited crossing facilities at the junction
- The junction forms part of the Birmingham–Solihull Sprint bus corridor, with further services expected
What the improvement works will involve
- Additional straight-ahead lane on the A45 eastbound and an additional right-turn lane into Damson Parkway, increasing capacity to five lanes on the Birmingham approach;
- Reallocation of lanes on Damson Parkway to provide two right-turn lanes with longer lane length to increase capacity to improve left-turn lane performance;
- The single carriageway at Damson Parkway between the A45 and the JLR Logistics Operations Centre access will become a dual carriageway;
- Extension of the A45 eastbound left-turn lane into Damson Parkway;
- Removal of the existing pedestrian footbridge and replacement with Toucan-controlled pedestrian and cycle crossings on A45 Coventry Road eastside, Terminal Road and Damson Parkway;
- Upgraded traffic signals to improve traffic flow.
Scheme benefits
- Improved journey times and reliability for all users;
- Support for economic growth in the area, with HS2, JLR, Birmingham Airport and the NEC;
- Improved road safety for all users, particularly pedestrians and cyclists;
- Better access to bus stops and support for active travel;
- Enhanced capacity and resilience for JLR and Damson Parkway traffic
