School Streets is a national project to promote sustainable travel and reduce the impact of school gate parking.
School Streets - Frequently Asked Questions
This page provides the answers to commonly asked questions about the School Streets scheme.
What is the School Streets scheme?
How do I apply for a permit?
If you live on a School Street, you will be allocated two permits. You will be required to display your permit in your vehicle windscreen when driving through the restricted zones at the specified times.
For further information visit our School Streets Permits page.
What times are the restrictions in force?
The restriction times vary. Details can be found on our School Streets Permit page.
Can visitors or tradespeople visit residents who live on School Streets by car during the restriction times?
Visitors
Residents should arrange with visitors to avoid arriving during the restriction times. Access will be unaffected outside of these periods.
The following are currently exempt from the restrictions:
- taxis
- delivery drivers
- carers
- people working on behalf of gas, water or electricity suppliers
Tradespeople
Tradespeople carrying out works on properties located within the school exclusion zone are asked to not move their vehicles into or out of the zone during the restricted times.
Are there visitor permits?
We do not provide visitor permits.
I have a district nurse/carer that comes to visit me. Will the scheme affect them?
District nurses, carers and similar support workers will be exempt from the restriction and will not require a permit.
I am a Blue Badge holder. How will the scheme affect me?
Blue Badge holders are exempt from the restriction and will not require a permit.
Who enforces this restriction?
The police are the enforcing body.
What is the penalty for driving through the area when the restrictions are in force?
The police can issue a £50 fixed penalty fine to anyone caught driving through the restriction when it is in force.
If there’s not a physical barrier, how will the scheme work?
There are gateway signs at the entrance to each restricted street with details of the times that the restriction is in force.
The police are working with the Council and are fully supportive of the project.
For further information on the penalties please see our How it will work page.
Where can I park?
Parent/carers of school children
Parents/carers who are unable to walk their whole journey to school are asked to park outside of the restricted area and complete the last part on foot.
We have worked with local businesses to identify suitable alternative parking locations for school drop-off and pick-up including:
- Haslucks Green Junior School: parents/carers are welcome to park in the Asda Shirley underground car park on Haslucks Green Road
- Marston Green Infant Academy: parents/carers can use the car park at The Marston Green Tavern on Station Road
- Widney Junior School: we ask parents/carers to use the car park at Solihull Sports and Social Club on Brick Kiln Lane
- St Andrew’s Primary School: there are a number of nearby parking options including Hobs Meadow
We ask all parents/carers to park considerately and consider the access needs of residents.
Residents
Residents will have access to School Streets when the restriction is in force.
Any existing parking restrictions will continue to operate and anyone parking in contravention of these will be liable for the relevant penalty notice.
School staff
All the schools have been issued with permits which they will be able to allocate to staff with a specific need to drive through the School Streets during the restriction times.
Will the restrictions operate at the weekend and during the summer?
The scheme will only operate Monday to Friday.
Due to school holiday and term dates changing every year, we are unable to adapt the restrictions so that they only operate during term time. Therefore, the restrictions will be in force all year round.
I live on the edge of the restriction. Will the scheme cause an influx of parking on my road?
To help reduce parking and traffic disruptions, we will be promoting alternative forms of travel and encouraging parents and children to walk to school from home where possible. Therefore, we do not expect high levels of increased parking displacement.
