Lithium batteries
Lithium-ion batteries can cause serious fires if they are left inside appliances when they are disposed of.
To dispose of lithium-ion batteries safely:
Remove batteries first
Please remove all lithium-ion batteries from appliances before bringing them to the HWRC. Many items contain hidden batteries including:
- phones
- laptops
- toys
- vapes
- small electronic and electrical items
Use the dedicated battery containers
All lithium-ion batteries must be placed in the designated battery disposal containers at the HWRC.
Do not put batteries in the general waste or recycling skips, as they can cause fires.
Top safety tips
Tape battery terminals (ends) before disposal to reduce short-circuit risks.
Large or damaged batteries should be returned to the retailer or manufacturer such as e-bikes.
