Bikeability training for schools and other groups
Bikeability is a national programme. Solihull Council is funded by Active Travel England (ATE) via The Bikeabilty Trust to deliver a programme of Bikeability training based on the National Standard for Cycling Training.

Funded training
Learn to Ride
For riders who can balance, this module is designed for anyone who has yet to master pedalling and is aimed at children and young people from Year 3.
Bikeability Level 1 - Primary School
The Bikeability Level 1 course aims to:
- help children to master cycle handling in an off-road environment
- prepare riders for cycling on the road
Riders must be able to cycle (i.e. pedal and glide) to take part in Bikeability Level 1.
Bikeability Level 1 and 2 (combined) - Primary School
This course in usually delivered in Year 5, riders must be able to cycle (i.e. pedal and glide) to take part in Bikeability Level 1 and 2.
This progressive course develops mastery in cycle handling in an off-road environment before progressing on to quiet roads.
The course aims to develop riders’ skills and confidence to:
- cycle on single-lane roads
- navigate simple junctions with moderate motor traffic
Bikeability Level 3 - Year 6 to 8
The Bikeability Level 3 course aims to develop riders’ skills and confidence so they can ride in different road environments. This includes busy roads and junctions.
The course will support children to choose to cycle to school as they transition into secondary education.
Bikeability Level 2 must be completed before children can participate in Bikeability Level 3..
Public training courses
Public training courses are periodically available and may incur a charge or booking fee.
Child Cycle training - school holiday course
These are open to all age groups and available courses can be booked online.
Adult cycle training
We offer a range of adult support to get you cycling. You could be:
- a new rider
- looking to build confidence on the road
We are also now offering electric bike taster sessions.
