Over two thirds of homes in Solihull are estimated to need energy efficiency measures to achieve an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) of C or above.

These upgrades will also improve the health and wellbeing of occupants, while reducing energy bills and emissions.

Cost savings

The Energy Saving Trust estimates that a typical mid-terrace house could save approximately £140 per year on heating with energy efficiency upgrades.

According to Age UK’s ‘The Cost of Cold’ report, for every £1 spent on retrofit the NHS saves 42p in costs.

About Green Doors

Funded by Midlands Net Zero Hub, the project is delivered by Solihull Council and the Good Work Co-operative. As part of the Council’s action on the Climate Emergency, the project is working with local residents to show what home improvements can do to:

  • make homes healthier
  • improve indoor air quality
  • improve energy efficiency
  • reduce emissions

Residents Jane and Colin from Hampton-in-Arden were the first to open their home to small groups of people for educational visits. Visitors experienced the upgrades Jane and Colin made to their 2021-built property, including:

  • upgrading the gas boiler to an air source heat pump
  • installation of solar photovoltaic (PV) panels

Those who are considering installing a heat pump, solar panels or other energy efficiency measures are encouraged to attend the next events, along with housing and energy professionals and students.

This is a fantastic opportunity to learn from local homeowners who have been through the process, including choosing and working with contractors and talking to the organisers about where to begin when upgrading your home.
