Love Food, Hate Waste
The average UK family household spends £60 a month on food they throw away, which adds up to over £700 over the course of a year. Across the UK, this adds up to £12.5 billion a year. By reducing our food waste, not only can we save money but we can help save the planet too.
If global food waste were a country, it would be the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases after China and the USA. Decomposing food emits methane, a powerful greenhouse gas which is 80 times more damaging than carbon dioxide (CO2). Currently, 60 per cent of food waste comes from our own homes.
Next time you’re doing the weekly shop, cooking, and serving a family dinner or even thinking about a meal at your local restaurant, bear in mind how much food waste you might be generating. We appreciate it’s not always easy! Head over to the national Love Food Hate Waste campaign website for lots of great ideas.
