Free breakfast clubs: Guidance for schools
The UK government is delivering a national rollout of free 30-minute breakfast clubs in state-funded primary schools across England.
The free breakfast clubs programme aims to:
- reduce child poverty
- help working families
- give every pupil the best start in life, regardless of their background
The programme will eventually include all schools.

The offer
Free and nutritious breakfast food available to all primary-aged pupils at the school.
Timings
The club must run for a minimum of 30 minutes before the start of each compulsory school day.
Benefits for parents
The scheme will:
- save families up to £450 a year in childcare costs
- allow parents and carers to drop off children earlier without extra fees
After less than two terms, participating schools are already reporting improved:
- punctuality
- attendance
- behaviour

Minimum requirements
Schools and providers engaged on the programme must deliver a breakfast club that is:
- open to all pupils on roll at the school in reception to Year 6
- at least 30 minutes in duration, immediately before the start of each compulsory school day
- free and accessible
- providing a breakfast that adheres to the school food standards for England
- on, or in the vicinity of, the school site
