School clubs: Registering as a food business

If you run a before and after school club or holiday club and regularly provide food to children, you will likely need to register as a food business.

Before and after school clubs

Clubs that operate every school day and routinely provide any of the following will be considered a food business:

  • breakfast
  • snacks
  • drinks
  • light meals
  • dinner after school

Summer holiday clubs

Holiday clubs with organised staff will usually need to register as a food business if for consecutive years they:

  • operate every day for several weeks
  • serve lunches and snacks

Holiday clubs will not likely have to register as a food business if they are a:

  • one-week holiday scheme run once as a community event
  • short-term church holiday club providing only occasional refreshments
  • one-off children's event
