Attending a nursery - My child has hearing, visual, or physical delays alongside a significant learning delay

The Sensory and Physical Impairment (SPI) Team is a highly specialist team.

They work with children and young people who have a 

  • hearing impairment
  • physical disability
  • multi-sensory impairment
  • visual impairment.

All children and their families are supported by the team from diagnosis (which might be at a very early age). The support you could receive depends upon our eligibility criteria and individual levels of need, which are reviewed throughout the academic year.

If your child is known to healthcare professionals and has a diagnosed hearing impairment, physical disability, multi-sensory impairment, or visual impairment, but has not yet been referred to the SPI Team, the nursery SENCo can talk to their Area SENCo to check if a referral to the SPI team is appropriate.

If the Area SENCo agrees, the nursery SENCo can then make a referral. The SPI Team has specific criteria that must be met before any referral will be accepted.
