Council tax bands and charges

All properties are banded by the Valuation Office Agency (VOA). The valuation band determines how much council tax you pay and is shown on your bill. You can check your band by searching by postcode on the VOA website.

I think my council tax band is incorrect

If you think that your property is not banded correctly, please visit the VOA website for advice.

Long-term empty properties

If your property is unoccupied and unfurnished, you will have to pay a minimum 100% charge.

With effect from 1 April 2021:

Property status Charges
Properties empty (unoccupied and unfurnished) for up to 2 years 0% discount (full charge)
Furnished properties and second homes 0% discount (full charge)
Properties empty (unoccupied and unfurnished) for 2-5 years 200% charge (includes 100% empty property premium)
Properties empty (unoccupied and unfurnished) for 5-10 years 300% charge (includes 200% empty property premium)
Properties empty (unoccupied and unfurnished) for more than 10 years 400% charge (includes 300% empty property premium)

Any periods of occupation of six weeks or less will be disregarded when considering how long a property has been empty.
