From Monday 7 July 2025, there will be a charge for using the garden waste collection service.
This is in line with most other councils in the West Midlands and the majority of councils in the country.
The cost of the service is £49 for the year. Registration opened on 2 June and thousands of households have already signed up.
To get an Early Bird discounted subscription rate of £44, please register before 11 July.
- Step 1 - visit www.solihull.gov.uk/garden-waste and register before 11 July to get the Early Bird discount. If you are unable to pay online you can pay for the service by contacting Solihull Connect on 0121 704 8000 or by visiting one of our walk in centres.
- Step 2 – when the payment has been processed, a permit sticker will be sent to your address within 10-15 business days
- Step 3 – follow the instructions and put the sticker on the back of your green bin underneath the handles
- Step 4 – your garden waste will be collected as before on the same collection day
Subscribing to the garden waste is optional. For information about other ways to manage your garden waste, please check the council website. Other options include taking your garden waste to the Bickenhill Household Waste and Recycling Centre (you will need to book an appointment before visiting) or composting garden waste. Residents can also reduce the cost by sharing a subscription with a neighbour.
BUT please don’t put garden waste in your rubbish or recycling bins, it has to be kept separate or can’t be collected.
Solihull Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment and Infrastructure, Cllr Ken Hawkins, said: “I recognise that many people will be disappointed, but faced with considerable budgetary pressures, charging for our garden waste collection service, as other councils do already, is a fair one.
“Residents have the option of paying for a fortnightly collection which they will receive throughout the year, with the exception of a short break over Christmas and New Year, or disposing of their garden waste themselves by taking it to the household waste and recycling centre at Bickenhill or by using a compost bin. We have also introduced an Early Bird discount to make the service cheaper for residents. Just register before 11 July to get the reduced rate.”
