In exactly 12 months’ time Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games will begin.
To celebrate, Perry - the Commonwealth Games mascot – is visiting Solihull Town Centre at lunchtime today and Chelmsley Wood this afternoon as we mark one year to go!
And there will be a free, spectacular live sports festival in Birmingham’s Centenary Square from 10am until 6pm today.
From 28 July until 8 August 2022, the Games will be packed full of sport with around 4,500 athletes from 72 nations and territories participating, as well as a six-month cultural festival taking place across the West Midlands, making Birmingham 2022 the largest sporting and cultural event to take place in the UK since the 2012 London Olympics.
Deputy Leader of Solihull Council Cllr Karen Grinsell said: “This time next year Solihull will be hosting top athletes from around the world in six events at the NEC – Table Tennis and Netball, Badminton and Boxing, Weightlifting and Para Powerlifting. This is a fantastic opportunity to show the world what Solihull has to offer – and to give our sportsmen and women, spectators and tourists a proper Silhillian welcome!
“In the run up to the Games there will also be some fantastic opportunities to get involved – from volunteering and getting some valuable work experience, to dancing in the opening and closing ceremonies. I would really urge everyone to get involved in this very special opportunity for Solihull and the West Midlands region.”
