The mother or father can register the birth on their own and include both parents details if they were married when the baby was born.
Birmingham birth registrations
We are no longer appointed as deputies for Birmingham Registration District and will not be registering births on their behalf.
All births in England, Wales and Northern Ireland must be registered within 42 days of the child being born.
You should do this at the local register office for the area where the baby was born or at the hospital before the mother leaves.
If you cannot register the birth in the area where the baby was born, you can go to another register office and they will send your details to the correct office.
Request an appointment
Please call 0121 704 8002 to book an appointment to register a birth and order any birth certificates required.
All appointments will take place at The Core, Theatre Square, Solihull, B91 3RG
Please note: the registrar will only be able to issue certificates that have been ordered and paid for at the time of booking. You will also be able to order certificates after the registration.
Married parents
Unmarried parents
If the parents were not married to one another at the time of the birth, only the mother can register the birth alone. If the father's details are to be included in the birth entry, then both parents should attend together.
If the father wishes to have his details included, but is unable to attend with the mother, he must sign a Statutory Declaration of Acknowledgement of Parentage form, in the presence of a solicitor. The child’s mother will need to bring the completed form to the registration.
Birth certificates
At the time of registration the cost of a standard birth certificate is £12.50.
Our copy certificates page has information on how you can order a copy after registration.
Re-registering a birth
If you wish to include the natural fathers details to the birth entry, or the natural parents marry one another after the birth, it is possible to re-register the birth.
