QFT - Teaching Strategies

  • Plan and use multi-sensory teaching approaches – multiple senses including hearing, tactile, movement and visual.
  • Allow more processing/thinking time.
  • Don’t expect the child or young person to be able to listen and copy from the board at the same time.
  • Give clear simple and positive instructions and key vocabulary with visual support as necessary.
  • Repeat key vocabulary, peer contributions, directions and activities.
  • Model and teach active listening.
  • Gain pupils’ attention when they are expected to listen and attend.
  • Expose pupils to rich and varied language, and display key words along with definitions.
  • Use targeted open questions to check understanding.
  • Pre and post teach key vocabulary for lessons.
  • Provide key information in small chunks to avoid listening fatigue.
