Before beginning targeted and specialist intervention for a child and young person, it is important to assess and analyse their current presentation using an assessment tool.
Regular (usually termly but may be more frequent as required) multidisciplinary reviews are needed to share information, review progress, evaluate support strategies and interventions and make appropriate refinements.
Once concerns about a child or young person's social communication have been identified, more detailed assessment is likely to be needed to identify the specific areas of concern and potential barriers to learning.
For many children and young people teaching adaptations and reasonable adjustments can be enough to enable them to be successful within the classroom and thrive within wider school life.
