Register a birth

All births in England, Wales and Northern Ireland must be registered within 42 days of the child being born.

You should do this at the local register office for the area where the baby was born or at the hospital before the mother leaves.

If you cannot register the birth in the area where the baby was born, you can go to another register office and they will send your details to the correct office.

Babies born in Birmingham

If you live in Solihull or Birmingham and gave birth at a hospital or address in Birmingham you can, until further notice, make an appointment to complete a full registration at our office at The Core, Theatre Square, Solihull, B91 3RG while we work with Birmingham Registration Service to help them to reduce the number of outstanding birth registrations they have.

This service is only available on Thursday's and we only have a limited number of appointments.

If you live outside of Solihull or Birmingham and gave birth at a hospital or address in Birmingham please consult with your local register Office in the area where you live to arrange a Declaration for the Registration of a Birth.

When registering your baby please ensure you purchase any birth certificates you require. We cannot provide copy certificates for babies born in Birmingham after your appointment.

If you need a copy certificate please contact Birmingham Register Office. There may be a delay if your certificates are required within one month of registration.

Who can register a birth?

The mother or father can register the birth on their own and include both parents details if they were married when the baby was born.

If the parents were not married to one another at the time of the birth, only the mother can register the birth alone. If the father's details are to be included in the birth entry, then both parents should attend together.

If the father wishes to have his details included, but is unable to attend with the mother, he must sign a Statutory Declaration of Acknowledgement of Parentage form, in the presence of a solicitor. The child’s mother will need to bring the completed form to the registration.

Birth certificates

At the time of registration the cost of a standard birth certificate is £11.

Our copy certificates page has information on how you can order a copy after registration.

Re-registering a birth

If you wish to include the natural fathers details to the birth entry, or the natural parents marry one another after the birth, it is possible to re-register the birth.
