Assess, plan, do and review (APDR)

Where a child or young person have a diagnosed temporary or permanent hearing loss and/or hearing equipment such as hearing aids or cochlear implant processor they will then be identified as having a special educational need and support may be provided through SEN Support.

Progress will be monitored through cycles of Assess, Plan, Do, Review (APDR).

Pupils may have other needs in addition to those linked to their hearing impairment and this process will enable early identification of any additional needs.

A pupil’s difficulties may include:

  • Understanding environmental sounds.
  • Access to speech sounds.
  • Understanding instructions.
  • Responding to verbal cues.
  • Listening at a distance greater than 2 metres.
  • Communicating verbally with adults and peers.
  • Understanding new concepts and vocabulary.
  • Anxieties related to communication challenges.
  • Relying on peers for visual cues.
  • Withdrawal.
  • Frustrations related to accepting hearing loss.
