Solihull residents are once again advised to get online to ensure speedy payment of a Government Council Tax rebate.

Solihull Council has been urging residents to set up online customer accounts and Council Tax direct debit arrangements to avoid delay in receiving the money - if they are eligible.

The £150 Council Tax rebate was announced as part of a wider package of plans by the Chancellor of the Exchequer to support families amid rising global energy costs.

This one-off payment is to be made by local authorities, on behalf of government, direct to eligible households in Council Tax bands A-D.

The Government statement also said that eligible households paying Council Tax by direct debit should automatically receive the £150 from April.

Councillor Bob Sleigh OBE, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Resources, appealed to people to get online to avoid delays in payment.

Following reports of attempted scams and fraudulent callers linked to the rebate, he also said conducting business online with the Council is the safest way.

Cllr Sleigh said the best advice to residents is to set up an online account so their Council Tax is collected by direct debit and their details are kept safe. This is the easiest and most secure way for to interact with the Council.

Cllr Sleigh said: “Ideally people can sign up for an online Council Tax account where they will be able to set up their own direct debit which is by far the safest way.

“If you’re struggling to set this up for yourself, or need some help, you can telephone our contact centre who will be able to advise or set it up over the phone.”

Anyone in Council Tax Band A-D who hasn’t yet got an online account should try to sign up by this weekend (Sat 12 March) in time for the new billing year.

The online service is always available - 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and all relevant details are saved, which means less time spent filling in forms. It also allows people to track progress and get updates direct on service requests.
