The course costs £925 per person and includes:
- three day training from expert tutors
- registration fee
- cycle training resources to support your delivery
- registration with the Department for Transport (DfT)
- access to the 1st4sport LXP learner platform
- a 2-hour final assessment (including travel expenses up to a distance of 25-miles)
This course will be a combination of classroom based and practical learning with group and 1-2-1 tutoring.
Bursary (Bikeability Trust)
The Bikeability Trust has 2-part bursary of up to £900 available for new instructors.
If you are eligible for a bursary, we will apply for it on your behalf once your Bikeability Provider has indicated they are using one for you. The bursary will be deducted from your course fee.
Eligibility
To attend the course, you must:
- be at least 16 years of age
- be a regular on-road cyclist, who is confident riding in traffic at a standard that meets Bikeability Level 3 environment and who can pass that confidence on to others. This is a very practical course that involves considerable time cycling
- have a helmet, suitable clothing, a roadworthy bike and bike lock for each day of the course
Any experience of teaching or coaching young people and adults is beneficial and encouraged.
What you will learn
The instructor course prepares you to deliver Bikeability Level 1 to 3 courses to either adults or young people. By the end of the course, you will have improved your own riding skills and learnt how to:
- teach groups and individuals
- provide a safe training area
- assess when your trainees have achieved their outcomes
If you successfully complete the course, you will:
- be awarded Provisional National Standard Instructor status by the Department for Transport (DFT)
- be able to deliver cycle training with the assistance of a qualified instructor
If you successfully complete the PCA, you will:
- be a fully qualified National Standard Instructor
- receive a 1st4Sport Level 2 Award in Instructing Cycle Training certificate

- delivery methods for Level 1, 2 and 3 Bikeability
- conducting a bike, helmet and clothing check

- managing groups effectively
- moving trainees in groups
- conducting effective risk assessment
- safeguarding children and vulnerable adults
- signposting trainees to further cycling opportunities
- one-to-one feedback from an experienced tutor

Private course bookings
We can also deliver private courses to Bikeability providers and private organisations.
To host a course, you will need:
- secure bike parking for six to ten bikes
- one room to be used from 8:45am to 5:00pm with power and a large display screen
- catering space/breakout room close to the main room
- Level 1 - a traffic free area, for example a playground or car park, that must be a minimum size of two tennis courts
- Level 2 - quiet, low traffic streets with multiple junctions within one mile of base
