Level 2 Award in Instructor Cycle Training

The 1st4sport Level 2 Award in Instructing Cycle Training is for learners wishing to become a cycle training instructor.

The qualification builds a learner’s knowledge and skills to independently deliver cycle training sessions to groups of adults and children as per the National Standard for Cycle Training.

This qualification has been developed in partnership with The Bikeability Trust, who are responsible for providing and monitoring the quality of national cycle training in England on behalf of the Department of Transport (DfT).

Course fees - 1 April 2026 - 31 March 2027

The course costs £1,000 per person and includes:

• three-day training from expert tutors and ongoing support to qualification
• registration with the DfT
• a two-hour final assessment (including travel expenses up to a distance of 35 miles)
• digital certificate

Bursary (Bikeability Trust)

The Bikeability Trust has a bursary of £900 available for new instructors working with a Bikeability Provider.

If you are eligible for a bursary, the amount will be deducted from your course fee.

What you will learn

You will improve your own riding skills and learn how to:

• teach groups and individuals
• provide a safe training area
• assess when your trainees have achieved their outcomes

Qualification progression

This qualification may lead to paid or voluntary roles as a cycle training instructor in various settings such as:

• schools
• sports clubs
• community hubs
• leisure centres

Entry requirements:

You must:

• be at least 16 years of age
• provide proof of identity
• be able to undertake the assessment in English

You must also:

• be a regular on-road cyclist who is confident riding in traffic and can pass that confidence on to others (this is a very practical course that involves considerable time cycling)
• have a helmet, suitable clothing, a roadworthy bike and bike lock for each day of the course

Any experience of teaching or coaching young people and adults is beneficial and encouraged.

Reasonable adjustments / access arrangements

Reasonable adjustments are any actions or arrangements made prior to the start of a course to reduce the effect of a disability or difficulty that places a learner at a disadvantage. 

These adjustments are made to support the assessment of learners with a:

• permanent, long-term or temporary disability
• learning difficulty
• illness

Qualification stages

The course is delivered in the following stages:

• pre–course: two self-assessment forms and nine online modules to be completed before the three-day course
• three-day course: classroom and on-road technical days
• post-course: two online modules and 40 hours of practical workplace training to be completed, at which point you reach Provisional National Standard Instructor status
• final assessment: a two-hour final assessment in a live situation
• 1st4sport certification: you will be a fully qualified National Standard Instructor and receive a 1st4Sport Level 2 Award in Instructing Cycle Training certificate

Once registered you have two years to complete the qualification, but the average time for completion is six to nine months.
