Carer's assessment
Get involved
Would you like to help shape future adult social care services in Solihull? Get involved today.
If you regularly care for someone aged 18 or over without being paid, you are entitled to a carer’s assessment. This is an opportunity for you to have a conversation about how your caring responsibilities affect your wellbeing and quality of life, and to identify how we can help make your life easier.
It is beneficial to have your assessment with the person you care for to help us coordinate the care and support that you both need.
If you are a parent or carer of a child with additional needs, you can contact Carers Trust Solihull for support.
This short video explains more about a carer's assessment.

What to expect from the assessment
During the assessment, you will be asked the following:
- your name, contact details and information about your caring role
- the name, address, contact details and care needs of the person you support
- the impact the care and support you provide has on your own wellbeing
- the impact it has on the important elements of your life
- what you want to achieve day-to-day
- whether you work or want to work
- whether you study or want to study
- whether you want to do more socially
If you have difficulty understanding, remembering or using information, or have difficulty getting your point across, you may want to use an advocate. An advocate is someone who can help you be heard, represent you and support you with your assessment.
Eligibility
Whether you can receive care and support from Solihull Council will be based on the results of your assessment against the outcomes in the national eligibility criteria.
If you do not meet the national eligibility criteria, our adult social care team will provide information and advice on what community support is available.
What happens after the assessment?
Once your assessment has been completed you will receive a copy. If you are eligible for support, you will also receive an estimate of your personal budget.
The official amount of your care and support budget will be confirmed once your carer support plan is finalised.
You will always have an opportunity to give feedback about your assessment and, if you disagree with the results, you can ask for this to be reviewed.
