Where a child or young person has a diagnosed multi sensory Impairment they will then be identified as having a special educational need. Support may be provided through SEN Support and progress will be monitored through cycles of Assess, Plan, Do, Review (APDR).   Pupils may also have other needs in addition to those linked to their multi-sensory impairment and this process will enable early identification of any additional needs. Many pupils with MSI have their needs met through an Education and Health Care Plan (EHCP)

Where a child has a diagnosed MSI staff need to be aware of:

  • Assessments of functional hearing and vision and the impact when combined with a dual loss.
  • Assessment of the further impact of any other difficulties on sensory losses, impact of the sensory losses on the child, any additional needs and the differences in the 3 areas of difficulty encountered by an MSI child. – Communication, Gaining information. Orientation and mobility.
  • Children will have a diagnosed permanent or temporary dual loss of both distant senses.
  • Children may have other difficulties.
  • The balance of the dominant sense and greatest need will vary for each CYP.
